Toji, meaning “Eastern Temple,” was founded in 796 and helped lay the spiritual foundation of Kyoto. The temple later became the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism under the guidance of Kukai (Kobo Daishi), one of Japan’s most important religious figures.

History and Esoteric Buddhism

In the Kodo Hall, visitors will find 21 ancient statues arranged in a three-dimensional mandala. At the center is Dainichi Nyorai, the cosmic Buddha, surrounded by other deities. Each statue, carved from a single block of wood over 1,200 years ago, represents a core part of Shingon Buddhist teachings and rituals.

Five-Story Pagoda

Standing 55 meters tall, the five-story pagoda of Toji is the tallest wooden tower in Japan. Originally built in the Heian period and reconstructed in 1644, it remains a symbol of Kyoto. Inside are statues of four Buddhas and their followers.

Kobo-san Flea Market

On the 21st of each month, Toji hosts the Kobo-san flea market in honor of Kukai. Locals and tourists gather to browse antiques, crafts, and traditional goods. Many also make offerings of incense and money at the Mieido Hall, where Kukai is honored.
