Perched on the slopes of the Hakone foothills with breathtaking views of Mount Fuji, Gotemba Premium Outlets represents Japan’s most spectacular shopping destination, where world-class retail meets one of the world’s most iconic natural vistas. This expansive outlet mall combines the thrill of finding luxury goods at discounted prices with the awe-inspiring beauty of Japan’s sacred mountain, creating a shopping experience that transcends mere consumerism to become a memorable highlight of any visit to the Fuji-Hakone region.

A Destination of Dual Delights

Gotemba Premium Outlets masterfully blends two powerful attractions: international brand shopping at significant discounts and one of Japan’s most celebrated views. The mall’s strategic location takes full advantage of its geographical blessing, with Mount Fuji serving as a majestic backdrop to a shopping village designed in an American harbor town style. This unique combination makes Gotemba not just a shopping trip, but a full-day experience that satisfies both material desires and spiritual appreciation for Japan’s natural beauty.

The view changes throughout the day—morning crispness, afternoon clarity, sunset glow—each offering its own magic. I always recommend starting your shopping with a visit to the viewing areas to appreciate Fuji-san in its morning glory, then planning your shopping around the light. For those interested in closer encounters with the mountain, consider combining your outlet visit with a trip to the Fuji Five Lakes region.”

Shopping in the Shadow of a Sacred Mountain

Spread across two main sections (Hill Side and Lake Side) connected by a picturesque red bridge, Gotemba Premium Outlets houses approximately 200 stores featuring leading Japanese and international brands. The layout encourages leisurely exploration, with Mount Fuji views appearing unexpectedly around corners and at the end of shopping lanes, creating a delightful interplay between retail therapy and natural wonder.

This combination creates shopping as experience rather than chore, leisure as cultural engagement rather than mere consumption. Whether you come specifically for the shopping or primarily for the Fuji views, Gotemba delivers both with the elegance and attention to detail that defines the best of Japanese hospitality. It reminds us that even in pursuit of material goods, we can stay connected to natural wonder—and that sometimes, the best souvenirs are both what we bring home in our shopping bags and what we carry forever in our memories: the image of Mount Fuji presiding over a day of discovery and delight.”

Izukogen is a popular resort area for Tokyoites because its location on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula it is not far from Tokyo. There are many beaches, hot springs, and sightseeing spots around the peninsula. Let us introduce you to the best spots in Izukogen, Japan!

Jogasaki Kaigan

Jogasaki has an intricate coastline that was created by lava. The lava flowed from Mount Omuro during a big eruption about 4,000 years ago. This lava coastline spreads about 9 km, and there is a fun hiking trail along the coast. It is a comfortable walking course with some nice view spots on the way.

The most popular part of the coast is the area around the Kadowakizaki Lighthouse. You can walk on the black lava and look down at the ocean’s crashing waves. There is a suspension bridge over the ocean from one lava cape to another. It is very thrilling, walking above the ocean. Many movies and TV dramas have been filmed here because of the picturesque surroundings.

Mount Omuro

Mount Omuro is an active volcano with a height of 580 meters and a beautiful cone-shape. It was created by an eruption about 4,000 years ago. They think that the eruption lasted as long as 10 years. The lava from the mountain created the unique coastline of Jogasaki. There is a crater on the summit with a diameter of 250 meters and a depth of 40 meters. They burn the grass on the slope every year on the second Sunday of February. This tradition started about 700 years ago in order to grow good pampas grass.

You can reach the top by chair lift, it takes 6 minutes to get there. Then you can walk around the crater while enjoying a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean and Izu-Oshima Island in the distance. On a clear day, you may even see a few more of the Izu Seven Islands. You can see Mt. Fuji on the other side.

The area around the mountain is called Sakura-no-Sato. Cherry blossoms‘ main season is from late March to early April, but there are 40 species of cherry trees here, so you can enjoy the flowers from September to June.

Izu Shaboten Zoo

Izu Shaboten Zoo is a theme park of cactus and animals that opened in 1959. Its location is close to Mount Omuro. There are five greenhouses full of cactus. They are the South American Pavilion, African Pavilion, Madagascar Pavilion, Mexican Pavilion, and Forest Cactus Pavilion respectively. Many types of unique cactus are exhibited year-round by keeping the best environment for the cactus.

Other than cactus, they showcase several animals, such as chimpanzees, lamas, ling-tailed lemurs, squirrel monkeys, etc. Among them, the most popular animal is the capibara. They have become very famous because they enjoy taking baths in a hot spring in the winter. You can get pretty close to the animals, so kids like this park too.

There are restaurants and souvenir shops in the park, and they do an impressive illumination year-round in the nearby Izu Granpal Amusement Park.

Lake Ippeki

Lake Ippeki is a beautiful lake near Izu Koge, a small crater lake with a size of 0.23 km2. It is shallow, the average depth is only 2.2 meters and the maximum depth is 7 meters. It was created by a hydrovolcanic explosion that happened about 103,000 years ago.

The lake is nicknamed the ‘Eye of Izu’. You can walk around the lake which is about 3.7 km. In the lake live bluegills which were released by the Emeritus Emperor more than 70 years ago when he was still a Crown Prince.

Cherry Blossom Street in Izukogen

There are many cherry blossom viewing spots in Izu Kogen, including Mount Omuro. Among them, the most famous place is called Sakuranamiki which is a three-kilometer sloping road. There are about 600 cherry trees on both sides of the road and when the season arrives in late March or early April, it becomes like a long cherry tunnel.

There are some coffee shops and souvenir shops along the road.

Retirement Community

Izu area has a moderate climate and people can enjoy nature and a nice view of the ocean. So, the area attracts a lot of tourists. It is also a popular area to buy a second house for those who can afford it, and to move after you retire. Izukogen is one of the most popular areas for multiple-home owners and retirees because of its proximity to Tokyo and the convenience of transportation and many shops, supermarkets, and restaurants in the area.

Relaxing in Izukogen

Another reason why many people choose Izukogen as a destination for travel or living is because of the hot springs. There are many hot spring hotels and day-use facilities. Also, if you live there you can build taps that give hot spring water in your house and bathe in it every day. Japanese people really love hot springs.

You can also enjoy fresh seafood in the area. There is a fish market close to Izukogen station, and there are many seafood restaurants. Amanokoya offers very good food and a cozy atmosphere. They built a restaurant over the ocean, so you will feel as if you are in the middle of the ocean. One of their specialties is a seafood miso soup served in a huge cup.

You don’t need to go all the way to Okinawa if you want to go to a white sandy beach with azure blue waters in Japan. Volcanic peninsula Izu in Shizuoka prefecture has its fair share of wonderful beaches. Of these, Shimoda has the most beautiful one according to most people. It is hard to believe that this subtropical paradise is only 2 hours away by train from Tokyo station.

Shimoda Beach Attractions

The number one attraction of Shimoda is, of course, its whitest beach Shirahama beach. It is crowded during Japan’s beach season which only lasts from early July until late August. In the off-peak season when it is already warm but not in season yet, however, it is wonderfully quiet with only a few people enjoying the crystal clear refreshing seawater.

It is possible to bodyboard and surf here although the waves are not the highest, and snorkeling is also an option. Please note that during the off-season you have to bring your own gear. In July and August, there are shops nearby that rent boards and snorkeling gear. There are other good beaches in the area as well, such as Tatadohama beach, Sotoura beach, and Kisami Ohama beach.

Other Attractions

Off the shore, you can enjoy the views of Shimoda as well from a boat, a kayak, or while doing SUP. The Nesugatayama Cable Car service, available from the Shimoda Station, takes you to the peak of Mt. Nesugatayama.

Shimoda also has historical importance as the landing place of several of Commodore Perry’s ‘black ships’ in 1854. This was an event that marked the end of Japan’s era of isolation and the start of diplomatic relations between the US and Japan. There is a Matthew Perry monument near Shimoda Marine Park with Perry’s statue to commemorate this big event. Perry Road is a scenic district that used to be a red light area. Now you can enjoy cute little cafes and restaurants in the area.

If you come to Shimoda with kids, the Shimoda Aquarium is a nice stop. What’s special about this aquarium is that there are many animals that you can really get close to or even touch, under the supervision of the staff.

Cape Irozaki, at the southern tip further down the Izu Peninsula half an hour away from Shimoda, is a scenic spot with its lighthouse and towering cliffs. The view of which you can enjoy from aboard a boat that tours around the cape. You can also enjoy its tropical atmosphere at a huge tropical botanical garden near the station. Not too far from Cape Irozaki is Hirizo Beach, one of the best spots to snorkel on the Izu Peninsula.

Lake Hamanako is a resort area, with an amusement park and onsen with lake views. Located on the way between Tokyo and Kyoto, it is a good place to make an overnight stop.

Lake Hamanako in Shizuoka Prefecture is Japan’s tenth largest lake. The lake is a commercial source of cultivated Japanese eel, nori, oysters, and Chinese soft-shelled turtles. The lake is a source of sea bass whiting, and flounder, among other species. This is not a multi-day destination, but rather a place to make a stop on the way from the Tokyo or Shizuoka area to the Kyoto/Osaka Kansai area.

Lake Hamanako Attractions

The lake has been developed as a resort area, with an amusement park and onsen with lake views. Some of the onsen resorts accept day visitors such as Hanasaki no Yu. Amusement park Pal Pal is especially interesting for families with kids between 6-12 years old. You also can take a short cruise on a sightseeing boat allowing you to enjoy the scenery from the surface of the lake.

Another way to enjoy the view is from the air aboard the Kanzanji Ropeway. Connecting Lake Hamanako with the lookout area at the peak of Mt. Okusa, it boasts great views. The Hamamatsu Flower Park has something in bloom every season, but the best seasons are spring, summer, and autumn.

Of course, a visit to Lake Hamanako is not complete without tasting the local specialty. We especially recommend unagi (eel) that is locally farmed. You can find this dish in most restaurants in the area.

Kawazu is a town located on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka prefecture. facing Sagami Bay and the Pacific Ocean, the town has a temperate maritime climate. There are hot summers and short cool winters, with the weather moderated by the effects of the warm current offshore. Kawazu is only a small town, and it is a good spot for a day of nature and rest with fewer international tourists. The area’s cherry blossoms are also worth seeing! Here’s a short travel guide for Kawazu.

Attractions

Parts of the town are within the limits of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The area is noted for a large number of hot springs. A great hot spring resort in Kawazu is Amagiso. Due to the warmer temperature compared to Tokyo, Kawazu cherry blossoms bloom a bit earlier. Early February through early March is the best time to go. The Kawazu cherry trees have the characteristic large pink flowers.

The rows of the cherry trees continue along the Kawazu River for about three kilometers in the town. The Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival is held every year from February 10 through March 10. Despite the cold weather, large numbers of visitors enjoy the cherry blossom viewing. The cherry trees are beautifully illuminated at night and captivate the viewers.

Not far from the town of Kawazu is the Kawazu Nanadaru Waterfalls. This is an idyllic place if you are looking for a quiet and beautiful natural area. There are paths and bridges that will help you discover the area, and there is a bus from Kawazu town that brings you here in less than 30 minutes.

The iZoo is a modern zoo that only opened in late 2012, and it is specialized in reptiles. Compared to many other zoos, the enclosures are relatively animal-friendly and clean, and the zoo helps in conservation efforts for rare species. Imaihama is the best beach in the area, it is nice and quiet off-season, and it gets crowded in Japan’s beach season in July and August.

Atami is a coastal onsen hot spring resort in Shizuoka, Japan on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula southwest of Tokyo. The name Atami literally means ‘hot ocean’. This town has been a popular onsen resort since the 8th century and is ranked as one of Japan’s Three Great Hot Springs. Atami is a popular destination for cherry blossom viewing in spring and fireworks and the beach in summer. A visit to the city can be combined with a multi-day trip to Mt. Fuji, Hakone, or other areas on the Izu Peninsula like Shimoda.

Atami Attractions

Today, the coastline is heavily developed and covered with hotels, and in summer the sandy beach is popular. At the heart of the onsen resort is the onsen Geyser that spouts huge quantities of hot water. Another attraction is the MOA Museum, located on top of the hill on the mountainside of Atami Station. Housing approximately 3,500 paintings and works of applied arts, it is a great destination if you love modern art.

If you arrive by railway, it is nice to take a little foot bath near the station at the public Ieyasu no Yu. For 100 yen you will get a towel, and you can rest your feet a bit in the warm water. Like most coastal towns in Japan, one thing not to miss out on is the fresh seafood. There are plenty of great local restaurants where you can have just that, Kimi no Hamayaki is a good example of such a restaurant.

Castle and Garden

Atami Castle which was built in 1959 is also a famous attraction. At 160m in height, the observation deck at the top offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and ocean. With a clear sky day, you can see some of the Izu Islands off the shore over Sagami Bay. There is a museum inside depicting an old samurai homestead.

If you want to see something slightly different, the 18+ Atami Hihoukan is the only sex museum that remains today in Japan. You can learn about the erotic culture of the Edo period, and if nothing else it is definitely a unique experience to visit this museum.

The Akao Herb and Rose Garden make for a nice tea time visit. With lush gardens and pretty sea views to go with your tea, it is a great place for a break. For nice views from even higher up, the Atami Ropeway will offer you just that. If you want to see a historical villa from the early 20th century with a Japanese garden, be sure to visit Kiunkaku.
