What is Nagoya Castle?

Nagoya Castle is one of Japan’s most iconic castles, located in the heart of Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. Originally built in 1612 by Tokugawa Ieyasu—the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate—it served as a strategic stronghold to secure control over central Japan. The castle became the seat of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa family, one of the most powerful in the Edo period.

The castle is instantly recognizable for its golden shachihoko—mythical tiger-headed fish—adorning the roof of the main keep (tenshu). These ornamental creatures not only symbolize protection from fire but have also become enduring symbols of Nagoya itself.

Although the original main tower was destroyed during WWII air raids, it was rebuilt in 1959 using concrete. Today, the castle complex includes the magnificently restored Honmaru Palace, known for its gold-trimmed fusuma paintings, intricate woodwork, and traditional Japanese architecture.

History and Cultural Significance

Nagoya Castle was commissioned by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1610 to solidify his control over the central region of Japan and guard the road between Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo). The construction was one of the largest architectural projects of the early Edo period and involved contributions from several feudal lords (daimyo), who were required to donate labor and materials—a tactic also used to weaken potential rivals.

The main keep (tenshu) was one of the largest of its kind and featured sophisticated defenses, stone walls, and a moat system that reflected the strategic priorities of the Tokugawa regime.

During the Meiji period, many castles in Japan were destroyed or repurposed, but Nagoya Castle survived until 1945, when it was heavily bombed in World War II. Most of the structures burned down, including the iconic tenshu. Fortunately, many artifacts and historical documents had already been removed for safekeeping.

In 1959, the main tower was reconstructed using concrete and modern materials. In recent years, however, the city of Nagoya has launched a long-term project to rebuild the castle using traditional wooden construction methods, aiming to restore its Edo-period authenticity.

The adjacent Honmaru Palace, formerly the residence and administrative center for the ruling family, was meticulously reconstructed using traditional techniques and materials. It reopened fully to the public in 2018 and now stands as a highlight of any visit.

Today, Nagoya Castle is both a symbol of local pride and a window into Japan’s feudal past, offering educational exhibits, beautiful gardens, and seasonal events such as cherry blossom festivals.

What to See at Nagoya Castle

Main Keep (Tenshu)

Although the current main tower is a concrete reconstruction built in 1959, it still dominates the skyline with its grand, five-tiered design. Visitors can walk around its base and admire the famous golden shachihoko—mythical tiger-headed fish ornaments perched on the rooftop. These are symbols of protection against fire and are one of Nagoya’s most recognizable icons.

⚠️ Note: As of 2025, entry to the main keep is closed due to ongoing reconstruction plans to rebuild it in traditional wooden form. However, you can still explore the surrounding grounds and view it from multiple angles.

Honmaru Palace

This stunning wooden reconstruction of the original palace opened fully in 2018 and is a must-see highlight. Inside, you’ll find:
• Lavishly decorated sliding doors (fusuma) with gold-leaf paintings of tigers, pine trees, and birds
• Tatami-mat rooms once used for official audiences, strategy meetings, and everyday life
• Authentic Edo-period architecture with historically accurate carpentry techniques
The experience gives you a vivid sense of life during the Tokugawa era.

Ninomaru Garden

A tranquil Japanese garden located on the eastern side of the castle grounds. This landscape garden features:
• Meandering paths
• Carefully pruned pines
• Seasonal flowers and koi ponds
In spring, it becomes a popular cherry blossom viewing spot, with over 1,000 sakura trees creating a picturesque backdrop.

Stone Walls and Moats

The massive stone walls, constructed using the no-mortar (dry-stone) technique, are considered engineering marvels of their time. They curve gently outward to resist collapse—part of the castle’s defense strategy. The double moats further enhanced protection and add to the scenic beauty.

What is Ghibli Park?

Ghibli Park is a theme park dedicated to the magical world of Studio Ghibli, located within Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park near Nagoya. Unlike traditional amusement parks, there are no roller coasters or loud attractions—instead, the park invites you to step into the everyday beauty, wonder, and imagination that define Ghibli films.

Created in close collaboration with Studio Ghibli, the park brings scenes from beloved movies to life through carefully designed buildings, interactive exhibits, and immersive landscapes. Visitors can explore recreated sets, ride a Cat Bus, walk through Satsuki and Mei’s house, or peek into the worlds of Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and more.

Ghibli Park isn’t about thrill rides—it’s about atmosphere. It’s a place for fans of all ages to feel the quiet magic and emotional depth that Ghibli stories are known for.

Main Park Areas & Attractions

Ghibli Park is divided into several themed areas, each based on a specific Studio Ghibli film or world. As of 2026, here are the five main sections:

Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse (ジブリの大倉庫)

The heart of the park, this massive indoor facility is filled with exhibits, interactive displays, photo spots, and mini-theaters.

You can see real-life recreations from Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and more.

Highlights: The Cat Bus Room (for kids), No-Face’s train car, and food courts themed after Ghibli films.

Dondoko Forest (どんどこ森)

Based on My Neighbor Totoro, this area features a full-scale replica of Satsuki and Mei’s house from the movie, nestled in a quiet forest.

Tip: This area involves a bit of walking and feels like you’re exploring the countryside.

Hill of Youth (青春の丘)

This zone includes elements from Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns, including the antique shop and the Earth Shop.

It’s a nostalgic walk through 1990s Tokyo with touches of fantasy.

Mononoke Village (もののけの里)

Toyota City is known for the great Toyota Museum and car factory, but did you know that the city also has an interesting history? Learn more about this city near Nagoya!

Toyota City in Japan is the largest city in Aichi prefecture, and it is a town full of hills. Around the station, you will find a cityscape as well as gentle natural sceneries. Most tourists come here just for the Toyota Museum, but there is more to see and do here. See how you can combine your visit to the museum with other attractions nearby!

New Impulse

Toyota city used to have a different name, Komoro. When the economy of Komoro was floundering because of the downturn of the silk industry there, but a certain new car factory brought a large economic impulse to the area, the city’s name was changed to Toyota in the hopes that the city’s economy would grow with the factory. It most definitely did, and nowadays almost everyone who lives in Toyota city is an employee of Toyota or a related company.

Toyota Factory and Museum

Toyota City is home to the Toyota Motor Corporation headquarter and factories, and more than 400 car-related companies. The Toyota Kaikan Museum is located at the site of the corporation and open to visitors, and this is where you can learn more about the company’s newest models and robots. The admission fee is only 500 yen, and you can easily spend around 2 hours here.

If you want to join a factory tour, this is free of charge but please note that you will have to book this in advance. If you are interested in cars and technology, this is a must-do. You will be able to see the assembly plant, and if you are lucky to take the tour at a certain time, you can see the welding shop as well.

Other Attractions in Toyota City

If you happen to be in Toyota in November, you can see amazing foliage in the Korankei Gorge. It is easy to reach by public transportation or by car. For those who want to learn more about handcrafts of the area, check out the nice Folk Craft Museum.

The Asuke Townscape is a picturesque preserved district that spans 2 kilometers. For an optimal experience, it is a good idea to take one of their free tours. The Obara Paper Art Museum has a washi paper art gallery and plays an important role in educating the public. It is a great place to learn about the traditional skills that craftsmen had and continue to pass on to the next generations. There are also plenty of hot springs in the area.

Nagoya doesn't feature often on tourists' itineraries, but If you would still find yourself in Nagoya, there are plenty of interesting places to see here. Find out where to go!

The post Nagoya, Aichi | The Center of Japanese Industry first appeared on Japan City Tour | Travel agency in Tokyo.

Nagoya is Japan’s third most populated metropolitan area. It is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and the principal city of the Nobi plain. As one of the country’s major transport hubs and industrial centers, Nagoya also has Japan’s leading port for international trade. Additionally, Nagoya has its own state-of-the-art airport Centrair, located only half-an-hour from the city center. But what is there to do in ‘the city that every tourist skips’? Trust us, there are plenty of attractions, and you get to enjoy them without the tourist crowds!

Nagoya Attractions

Nagoya doesn’t feature heavily on foreign tourists’ itineraries, not being as varied and metropolitan as Tokyo. Not having the traditional allure of Kyoto and mainly being an industrial city, people usually opt to skip it. You might, however, still find yourself in Nagoya, for example, to see the Sumo Grand Tournament in July.

Or because you are crazy about cars and are visiting the nearby Toyota plant for a free tour, fret not. There are plenty of other interesting places to see in Nagoya. The province of Aichi also boasts many amazing destinations, so chances are you will pass through Nagoya when visiting, for example, Takayama or the pearl divers in Ise.

Nagoya is not only about industry, transport, and trade. For those more interested in samurai history, the Tokugawa Museum provides a wealth of in-depth information and fascinating exhibits on the most famous of Nagoya families. Arcade shopping center Osu-Kannon in the heart of the city is a bustling area with a splendid temple at its heart. The seemingly endless covered arcades make the area one of the most interesting shopping areas in Japan.

The Atsuta-jingu shrine has a history that dates all the way back to 1900 years ago. The famous treasure hall has some very interesting items on display.

Ceramics & Good Food

Nagoya is famous for its porcelain and ceramic, so a visit to the Noritake Garden should definitely be included in your itinerary. It is not only a charming area, but you can also try your hands on painting your own china. If you don’t have the chance to see a castle elsewhere on your trip to Japan you should check out the recently renovated Nagoya Castle. In the middle of August, it is a must-visit, as this is the time when the yearly Nagoya Castle Summer Festival is held. Especially the evenings are dreamily beautiful with the light-ups.

Every region in Japan has its own distinctive cuisine, and Nagoya is no different. You can’t leave the city without having tried their dark red version of miso, with an extra-strong flavor compared to Tokyo-style white miso. Misokatsu, a fried port cutlet covered in a thick red miso sauce, is surely a dish you won’t easily forget! For those who like slightly more accessible flavors, everybody loves Nagoya-style tebasaki spicy chicken wings from Yamachan.

Nagoya also offers many excellent day trip options, one of the best being the castle at Inuyama. You will also want to see the historical village Meiji Mura, and the large Nagashima Spaland amusement park being just three of the options.

Your Japan Tour

If you are thinking about making a trip to Japan, as seasoned Japan experts we can help you create your perfect Japan tour. We can include destinations like Nagoya and experiences like a visit to the Toyota factory or watching a sumo match for you. Contact us to start planning your unforgettable holiday to this fascinating country.

Central Japan International Airport, or Centrair (airport code NGO), is located just outside Nagoya in Japan. It is Japan’s third most important international airport after Tokyo’s Narita Airport and Osaka’s Kansai Airport. It is also known as Chubu Airport. Constructed on a man-made island in the Bay of Ise, Centrair was opened in February 2005 in time for Expo 2005 Aichi. Taking over all international and most domestic air traffic from Nagoya’s Komaki Airport, it quickly became an important hub.

Overview and Transportation

Centrair is a large airport with all the usual facilities such as shops, restaurants, a post office, lounges, and a capsule hotel.

Taking you directly from the airport to Nagoya Station within an hour and a half, the public bus leaves every hour. The fastest and most convenient way, however, is taking the Sky Limited Express train which only takes 28 minutes to get to Nagoya Station. Taking a taxi to Nagoya Station from Centrair is quite expensive and will set you back around 150 USD.
