The Robot Restaurant in Shinjuku, Tokyo was not really a restaurant but a performing art show. It unfortunately closed permanently in July 2020.
What Was the Robot Restaurant?
A little different from what its name might suggest, the Robot Restaurant in Shinjuku is not actually a restaurant. You will not be served by robots (you will need to go to Shibuya Fukuras for that), and we don’t especially recommend you to order the bento they offer but instead to have dinner in Shinjuku before the show. So what is the Robot Restaurant about then? It is a spectacular show featuring dancers, music, and gigantic robots. You can enjoy a very unique performance in Japanese school festival style that will overwhelm you in a good way.
The Robot Restaurant is located in the middle of Tokyo’s biggest nightlife district Kabukicho, Shinjuku. Foreigners used to say that there was no nighttime entertainment in Japan, but the Robot Restaurant revolutionized this situation. The operators invested 100 million USD and opened the restaurant in 2012, and it has been delighting audiences from all over the world ever since.
Finding the restaurant was easy because there are a lot of signboards all around the area. Then you finally find big robots at the entrance. If you arrive earlier than showtime you are invited to wait in the flashy waiting lounge where you can enjoy live music without an additional fee, which is very much recommended.

The show consists of 4 acts.
Act 1 is a dynamic Taiko drumming show on the robots.
The 2nd act is a funny battle of creatures in the beautiful forest against evil robots.
Act 3 is a modern dance show using laser beams and techno music.
Act 4, you will be handed a lightsaber which you can wave while a great number of robots parade on the stage with festive music.
You will absolutely get excited by this one-of-a-kind show.
