Between Tokushima’s Naruto Peninsula and Awaji Island in the Seto Inland Sea, one of nature’s most dramatic performances unfolds daily—the majestic Naruto Whirlpools (Naruto no Uzushio). These powerful tidal phenomena, reaching up to 20 meters in diameter with speeds of 20 km/h, represent one of Japan’s most spectacular natural wonders and rank among the world’s three largest tidal whirlpools alongside Italy’s Messina Strait and Canada’s Seymour Narrows.

The Science Behind the Spectacle

The Naruto Whirlpools are born from a perfect convergence of geographical and astronomical factors that transform the Seto Inland Sea into a natural theater of hydraulic power. The phenomenon occurs in the Naruto Strait, a narrow channel connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea, where extreme tidal differences—up to 1.5 meters between high and low tide—create massive water pressure differentials.

Key Factors Creating the Whirlpools:

Tidal Range: Some of Japan’s largest tidal variations

Channel Topography: V-shaped sea floor accelerating water flow

Water Volume: Approximately 1.4 billion tons passing through daily

Current Speed: Reaching 12-13 knots during spring tides

Caede’s Scientific Insight:
“What makes Naruto particularly special is the predictability of the spectacle. Unlike many natural phenomena dependent on weather or seasons, the whirlpools follow the moon’s rhythm. During spring tides (around full and new moons), the water dance reaches its most dramatic intensity, while neap tides offer a gentler performance. This reliability makes planning your visit wonderfully straightforward. For more of Japan’s dramatic coastal phenomena, consider the tidal pools of Miyajima’s Itsukushima Shrine or the rock formations of Shirahama’s Sandanbeki Cliffs.”

<polygon fill="transparent" stroke="transparent" points="0,1 0,1 0,1 0,1 "/>

Experiencing the Whirlpools: Multiple Perspectives

1. Cruise Experience: Dancing with the Currents
Several cruise operators offer intimate encounters with the whirlpools:

Special timing: Cruises scheduled around peak tidal flow times

Uzushio Kisen: Large observation boats with indoor and outdoor decks

Wonder Naruto: Smaller boats getting closer to the action

Morning cruises typically offer calmer sea conditions. Don’t just watch—listen! The roar of the whirlpools is as impressive as their visual spectacle. If you’re prone to seasickness, opt for larger vessels or consider viewing from the Naruto Bridge instead. For other unique Japanese boat experiences, try the jikkokubune canal boats of Yanagawa or Matsushima’s scenic bay cruises.”

2. Naruto Bridge Walkway: A Bird’s-Eye View
The Naruto Bridge features a unique observational walkway 45 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the whirlpools and surrounding coastline.

3. Uzu-no-Michi Walkway: At Water Level
A 450-meter pedestrian walkway beneath the bridge allows visitors to observe the whirlpools from multiple angles at closer proximity.

What is the Iya Valley?

Hidden deep in the mountains of Tokushima Prefecture, the Iya Valley is one of Japan’s last remaining “hidden regions.” Steep gorges, vine-covered bridges, misty forests, and tiny villages clinging to the hillsides—this is Japan as few have seen it.

Known for its dramatic scenery, Kazurabashi vine bridge, and hot springs nestled in the cliffs, the Iya Valley feels like stepping back in time. Long isolated from the rest of the country, it was once a hiding place for the defeated Heike warriors in the 12th century, and much of its remote character remains intact today.

The post The Nature’s Great Whirlpools first appeared on Japan City Tour | Travel agency in Tokyo.

Naruto is located in the north-eastern tip of Tokushima Prefecture in Japan, and it is famous for its great whirlpools. The Naruto Whirlpools can be seen in the Naruto Strait which lies between Shikoku and Awaji Island. It is one of the highlights in Tokushima. Check out how to best observe these unique natural wonders!

How Are the Naturo Whirlpools Formed?

At high tide, the seawater flows from the Pacific Ocean to the Seto Inland Sea, and at low tide, the seawater flows in reverse. Because the width of the strait is narrow, only about 1.3 km, at high and low tide the speed of the tidal current becomes 13 to 15 kilometers per hour. It is regarded as one of the three most rapid currents in the world together with Seymour Strait in Canada and Messina Strait in Italy.

It is the fastest current in Japan. The fast current and complicated shape of the seabed generate the whirlpools. The diameter of a whirlpool can become up to 30 meters at spring tidal currents. Let’s see 3 different ways to appreciate the whirlpools!

From the Observation Deck

You can appreciate the Naruto Whirlpools in three ways. One is overlooking the whirlpools and beautiful scenery around it from the observation on the hill.

This facility is called Naruto Escahill (鳴門エスカヒル). To go up to the 90 meter-high observation, you need to take two escalators and one elevator. The first escalator is 68 meters long. It used to be the longest escalator in Japan when it was built in 1989. The escalator is covered with glass windows, so you can go up to the observation without getting wet if it would be a rainy day.

At the entrance, there are a souvenir shop and a coffee shop. The coffee shop serves ice cream. Please try the Kintoki-imo ice cream which is an ice cream using real chunks of local sweet potato. It is truly delicious!

The entrance fee is 400 yen for adults and 100 yen for junior high school and elementary school students. They are open from 9:00 to 17:00 (8:00 to 17:00 in the summer).

From the Glass-bottom Bridge

Uzuno-michi (渦の道) is a walking passage built under the Ohnaruto Bridge. The Ohnaruto Bridge was constructed in 1985 between Shikoku and Awaji Island. The length of the bridge is 1,692 meters over the 1,300 meters Naruto Strait. Uzuno-michi was built under the main bridge in 2001 for the tourists to enjoy the whirlpool directly underneath.

The length of the passage is 450 meters. You can walk almost to the middle of the strait. There, you will see glass windows on the floor. You can look down the whirlpool right underneath you through the glass windows. It is very thrilling to look down from 45 meters above the water.

The entrance fee is 510 yen for adults, 410 yen for senior and junior high school students, and 260 yen for elementary school students. They are open from 9 am to 5 pm (8 am to 5 pm from March to September).

From a Tourist Boat

There are tourist boats from both the Naruto side and the Awaji Island side. The one from the Naruto side is called Naruto Kanchosen (鳴門観潮船). During the 30-minute cruise, you can see the whirlpools from very close up.

Please check the time of the high tide and low tide before riding the boat.

The cruise fee is 1,800 to 2,400 yen (900 to 1,200 yen for elementary school students) depending on the type of boat. They operate cruises between 9 am to 4.20 pm.

Tokushima City is the capital of Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku Island, which is the 4th largest island in Japan. The population is about 250,000. The city is located at the mouth of the 194 km-long Yoshino River, and it has two claims to fame; the Awa Odori dance festival and the Naruto Whirlpools. Let’s learn more about these attractions!

Awa Odori

The city’s main tourist attraction is the Awa Odori, a highly popular, annual dance festival held during the Obon season in mid-August. The Awa Odori dance is known throughout Japan. The 400-year-old dance is currently also performed outside the prefecture, and dancers have been invited to perform at overseas events.

The Awa Odori dance is considered to be as passionate and international as Rio’s Carnival. Therefore you may find yourself joining in on the fun. There are many groups of dancers called ‘Ren’. They practice hard in order to dance well at the festival.

There are male dances and female dances that are slightly different from each other. Men dance while wearing a happi coat while women dance while wearing a straw hat. They are accompanied by 6 instruments. The Japanese flute, shamisen, 3 kinds of drums, and sho (a bell hit by the wooden stick).

Awaodori Kaikan

In case you can’t be there at the time of the event, the Awaodori Kaikan in the center of the city is open for you to experience the Awaodori at any time of the year. If you wish, you can even dance here during a one-hour experience. First, the professional local dancers give a demonstration. It is done in a really beautiful setting with colorful lighting. They dance to the rhythm of the instruments.

After the first performance, they will give a lesson on how to dance and then you can join them. Two guests will be chosen as the best dancers, and they can get a small prize. Then they give one last performance. After you try to dance yourself, you can appreciate their professional skills even more.

The venue is located at a 10-minute walk from Tokushima station.

Naruto Whirlpools

In Tokushima, you can also visit the famous giant Naruto whirlpools, just outside of the city on the shore of Naruto strait. There is a narrow strait between the cape of Naruto and Awaji Island of about 1.3 km. At high tide, the seawater flows from the Pacific Ocean to the Seto Inland Sea, and at low tide, the seawater flows in reverse.

Because the width of the strait is narrow, at high and low tide, the speed of the tidal current become 13 to 15 kilometers per hour. It is the fastest current in Japan. Because of this fast current and the complicated shape of the seabed, whirlpools are generated whose diameter can become 15 meters.

You can appreciate the whirlpools in three ways. One is overlooking the whirlpools and beautiful scenery around it from the observation tower on the hill. You can also look down the whirlpool through the glass window on the floor from the passage built under the Ohnaruto Bridge. And if you ride a sightseeing boat, you can see the whirlpools from very close up.

The Iya Valley region is a scenic area known for its dramatic mountain valleys and old vine bridges. Situated in the western part of Tokushima and nearly in the center of Shikoku, the Iya area is one of the large ‘hidden mountain regions’ in Japan. Although access has improved in recent years, the Iya Valley and the inner parts of Shikoku have historically been remote and difficult to reach.

In modern times, the Iya Valley has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. Deep in the bosom of Mt. Tsurugi, the second tallest mountain in Shikoku, the region is surrounded by the mountains of the Shikoku Mountain district. With a deep valley formed among the mountains cut through by the Iya-gawa river, a tributary of the Yoshino-gawa river.

The Vine Bridge

The vine bridge over the Iya-gawa river, called ‘Iya-no-Kazura-bashi’, is a 45 meter-long and 2 meter-wide suspension bridge with a height of 14 meters above water level. It is one of Japan’s 3 rare bridges and designated as a national important folkloric property. In order to keep the bridge safe to use, the bridge is rebuilt every three years.

There are some legends about why this bridge was made. One is by the famous monk Kobo-Daishi, the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. When he visited the village, local people had a problem because it is very difficult to go to the other side of the river, so he created the bridge. Another story is related to the Taira clan.

The Taira were completely defeated by the Minamoto clan in the late 12th century, during the Gen-Pei war. It is said that some of the members of the Taira clan survived and started living in Iya, deep in the mountains to hide from the Minamoto clan. The Taira people made the bridge, but just in case they were attacked by Minamoto, the bridge was made in such a way that it can be cut down easily.

The scenic Oboke Gorge is surrounded by rocks, crystalline schist from sandstone. Here, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery from a sightseeing boat. Many rocks have special names, for example, one rock looks like a lion, so it is named ‘Lion Rock’. One rock’s tilt is different from the others, so it is named ‘Bigoted Rock’.

The cruise lasts about 30 minutes and costs 1,200 yen for adults and 600 yen from 3 years to elementary student age.

The Oku-Iya area is nicknamed the Japanese Tibet because of its inaccessible location. In Oku-Iya, there is a 300-year-old folk house. American writer and Japanologist Alex Arthur Kerr bought the house in 1973. He restored the house to a liveable state, including re-thatching the kayabuki roof using traditional materials. The house was given the name Chiiori, or “House of the Flute”. The restoration of Chiiori was a project that was started by Kerr and others to preserve Japan’s vanishing arts, culture, and traditional lifestyle.

In 2007, Kerr decided to become more personally involved with Iya. He expanded and reorganized the board of directors of the project and closed the house for a few months for renovations. It reopened in November 2007. You can now stay at the house, or you can visit it by reservation. Be aware that there is no public transportation to Chiiori, so you will have to take a taxi from Oboke station.
