Nestled on the border between Osaka and Kyoto Prefectures, the Yamazaki Distillery stands as the sacred birthplace of Japanese whisky and the heart of Japan’s globally acclaimed whisky production. Founded in 1923, this historic distillery represents far more than a production facility—it is a cultural heritage site where Japanese craftsmanship, natural bounty, and Western technology have been refined through a uniquely Japanese sensibility.

An Ideal Location in Harmony with Nature

The Yamazaki Distillery’s greatest feature lies in its geographical advantages. The pristine groundwater selected for Japan’s “100 Famous Waters,” the humid climate prone to mist formation, and the rich natural environment shaped by the changing seasons all contribute to Yamazaki whisky’s distinctive and complex flavor profile. Particularly, the “Yamazaki no Rikyū no Mizu” (Water of the Yamazaki Imperial Villa) flowing from Lake Biwa Canal possesses a rare quality in Japan, combining the characteristics of both soft and hard water, providing miraculous conditions for whisky making.

This ‘terroir’ is the most significant factor determining Yamazaki whisky’s character. During the distillery tour, don’t just observe the manufacturing process—feel with your entire being the water, air, and climate of this land. After experiencing this production site harmonized with Japanese nature, I recommend enjoying a meal that blends with Kyoto’s traditional culture at a Kyoto veteran restaurant.”

Each still produces new pot (distillate) with different characteristics, and blending these creates Yamazaki’s complexity. In the aging warehouse, be sure to compare the aromas from different cask types. The ‘Mizunara aroma’ wafting from Japanese oak casks is a fragrance unique to Japan. Those interested in manufacturing processes might also visit Nada’s sake breweries to better understand the philosophical differences between sake and whisky production.”

Founding Challenges:
Japanese whisky production began with the collaboration of Masataka Taketsuru and Shinjiro Torii, involving trial and error to adapt Scottish techniques to Japan’s climate.

Discovery of Mizunara Casks:
In the postwar period when quality imported casks were difficult to obtain, the use of domestic Mizunara oak casks ironically created a unique aroma unparalleled in the world.

International Recognition:
Since the 2000s, winning numerous awards at international whisky competitions marked a turning point where Japanese whisky gained global recognition.

Founded in the early 17th century as a castle town, Kakunodate was carefully designed with separate districts for samurai and commoners. Even today, earthen walls clearly mark these historical divisions.

If you are traveling to Nara, Japan, Kasuga Taisha is one of the most iconic and spiritually significant sites you should visit. Founded in 768 AD, this Shinto shrine is famous for its thousands of stone and bronze lanterns, serene forested surroundings, and deep connection to Japanese culture and history.

Kasuga Taisha is dedicated to the deities of the Fujiwara family, one of Japan’s most influential aristocratic families during the Heian period. Visitors can walk through the shrine’s sacred grounds, which have been carefully preserved for over 1,200 years, offering a rare glimpse into ancient Japanese religious practices.

Thousands of Lanterns Light the Path

One of the shrine’s most enchanting features is its lanterns. Over 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns line the pathways and fill the main hall. During the Lantern Festivals (Setsubun Mantoro in February and Obon Mantoro in August), all the lanterns are lit, creating a magical and unforgettable experience for visitors.

Walk Through a Tranquil, Forested Path

Kasuga Taisha is located within Nara Park, surrounded by a lush forest that is home to wild deer roaming freely. Walking along the shaded paths leading to the shrine, visitors can enjoy a sense of peace and harmony with nature that is rare in busy Japanese cities.

Discover Traditional Architecture and Art

The shrine’s buildings feature classic Shinto architecture, characterized by bright vermillion pillars, elegant wooden structures, and gracefully curved roofs. The intricate carvings and details of the shrine offer art and architecture enthusiasts a beautiful example of traditional Japanese design.

If you are planning a trip to Nara, Japan, the Nara National Museum is one of the top cultural attractions you should not miss. Located next to Nara Park and within walking distance of famous temples, the museum offers an unforgettable introduction to Japanese Buddhist art and history.

Discover the Heart of Japanese Buddhist Art

The Nara National Museum specializes in Buddhist sculptures, paintings, ritual objects, and ancient scriptures. These artworks help visitors understand how Buddhism shaped Japanese culture, values, and aesthetics over centuries.

For international visitors, English explanations and audio guides make the exhibitions easy to understand, even if you are new to Japanese history or religion.

Historic Architecture with a Western Touch

Founded in 1889 and opened to the public in 1895, the museum itself is a cultural treasure. Its original building features Meiji-era Western-style architecture, beautifully blended with Japanese design elements.

This unique architectural style makes the museum appealing not only for art lovers but also for travelers interested in historic buildings and photography.

Seasonal Special Exhibitions You Can’t See Anywhere Else

One of the biggest highlights of the Nara National Museum is its limited-time special exhibitions. Some exhibitions feature rare Buddhist statues and artifacts that are usually kept inside temples and not open to the public.

Because exhibitions change by season, visiting the museum adds a unique, time-limited experience to your Japan itinerary.

Rising majestically to 3,776 meters, Mount Fuji stands not just as Japan’s highest peak, but as the nation’s spiritual heart and most recognizable symbol. This perfectly symmetrical stratovolcano, revered for centuries in art, literature, and religion, offers visitors a profound connection to Japan’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Whether viewed from afar or climbed during the official season, Mount Fuji provides an unforgettable experience that embodies the Japanese concept of mono no aware—the poignant beauty of impermanence.

A Mountain of Spiritual Significance

Mount Fuji’s cultural importance transcends its physical presence. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013 as a “Cultural Heritage” rather than a natural one, Fuji-san (as it’s respectfully called) has been worshipped as a sacred site for over a thousand years. The mountain is home to numerous shrines, with the Yoshida Trail traditionally used by pilgrims since the Edo period. This spiritual dimension adds depth to every encounter with the mountain, whether you’re climbing its slopes or simply admiring it from one of the many viewing spots around the Fuji Five Lakes region.

The traditional saying ‘He who climbs Mount Fuji once is a wise man; he who climbs it twice is a fool’ reflects both the mountain’s spiritual significance and its physical challenge. Today, climbers often visit the Arakurayama Sengen Park Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine before ascending.
The Climbing Experience: Preparation and Realities

The official climbing season runs from early July to mid-September, when weather conditions are most stable and mountain huts are operational. There are four main trails—Yoshida, Subashiri, Gotemba, and Fujinomiya—each offering different characteristics and difficulty levels.

Essential Climbing Information:

Best Time: July 10 to September 10 (official season)

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous (not technical but physically demanding)

Duration: 5-8 hours ascent, 3-5 hours descent (typically done overnight)

Altitude Sickness: A real concern—proper acclimatization is crucial

Start your ascent in the afternoon, rest at a mountain hut around 8 PM, then complete the climb to reach the summit for sunrise—the famous goraikō experience. Pack layers (temperatures range from 25°C at base to 0°C at summit), proper hiking shoes, headlamp, and plenty of water. Remember that the descent can be harder on your knees than the ascent! For alternative mountain experiences in Japan, consider the more accessible Mount Takao near Tokyo or the alpine landscapes of the Japanese Alps.”

The Different Faces of Mount Fuji

As Japan is a very humid country, we can see Mount Fuji only 20% of the year. We are most likely to see it entirely when it is less humid, that is to say in winter (between December and February). So even Japanese people, when we can see it, will take out their camera or iPhone to take a picture of it. When we imagine its silhouette, Mount Fuji always wears a snow white hat, and in summer he takes off his hat. So if you want to see Mount Fuji with his white hat on, we advise you to come to Japan in winter or early spring.

Finally, as it is the highest mountain in Japan, we can see it from everywhere. But its shape is different depending on where you see it from. Enjoy these pictures I took from various vantage points when I was traveling with foreign tourists!

When we take the planes from Tokyo to the south of Japan, during good weather we can see Mount Fuji. From time to time only his head, but when the sky is clear, we can see up to his robe. The most spectacular view I had of Mount Fuji was when I could see its crater from the plane. This happened when I flew to Hiroshima from Tokyo. As the airway changed, it was the only time I could get that view.

So what are your favorite pictures? Thanks to my work as a guide, I had the opportunity to see it quite often. But still, every time I can see it, I am happy like foreign tourists who see it for the first time. It’s a magical mountain that always gives us the joy of being able to discover it.

Between Tokushima’s Naruto Peninsula and Awaji Island in the Seto Inland Sea, one of nature’s most dramatic performances unfolds daily—the majestic Naruto Whirlpools (Naruto no Uzushio). These powerful tidal phenomena, reaching up to 20 meters in diameter with speeds of 20 km/h, represent one of Japan’s most spectacular natural wonders and rank among the world’s three largest tidal whirlpools alongside Italy’s Messina Strait and Canada’s Seymour Narrows.

The Science Behind the Spectacle

The Naruto Whirlpools are born from a perfect convergence of geographical and astronomical factors that transform the Seto Inland Sea into a natural theater of hydraulic power. The phenomenon occurs in the Naruto Strait, a narrow channel connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea, where extreme tidal differences—up to 1.5 meters between high and low tide—create massive water pressure differentials.

Key Factors Creating the Whirlpools:

Tidal Range: Some of Japan’s largest tidal variations

Channel Topography: V-shaped sea floor accelerating water flow

Water Volume: Approximately 1.4 billion tons passing through daily

Current Speed: Reaching 12-13 knots during spring tides

Caede’s Scientific Insight:
“What makes Naruto particularly special is the predictability of the spectacle. Unlike many natural phenomena dependent on weather or seasons, the whirlpools follow the moon’s rhythm. During spring tides (around full and new moons), the water dance reaches its most dramatic intensity, while neap tides offer a gentler performance. This reliability makes planning your visit wonderfully straightforward. For more of Japan’s dramatic coastal phenomena, consider the tidal pools of Miyajima’s Itsukushima Shrine or the rock formations of Shirahama’s Sandanbeki Cliffs.”

<polygon fill="transparent" stroke="transparent" points="0,1 0,1 0,1 0,1 "/>

Rising above the city of Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture, Matsuyama Castle is one of Japan’s few remaining original castles, and arguably the most striking structure on the island of Shikoku. Built atop Mount Katsuyama, it offers panoramic views of the city below and the Seto Inland Sea beyond. With stone walls, wooden gates, and a fully climbable main keep, it’s a rare and authentic example of Edo-period military architecture.

Yes—Matsuyama Castle is one of Japan’s twelve remaining original castles, known as genzon tenshu (現存天守). While many Japanese castles were rebuilt in modern materials, the main keep of Matsuyama Castle was reconstructed in 1854 using traditional wooden architecture, and has remained intact ever since.
Originally constructed in 1603 by feudal lord Kato Yoshiaki, the castle has endured fires, war, and natural disasters. Today, you can walk through the same wooden interiors, steep staircases, and stone corridors that samurai once used over 150 years ago. In addition to the central keep, many of the gates, turrets, and stone walls from the Edo period also survive, making the entire mountaintop compound a rare and valuable historical site.

I visited Matsuyama Castle on a sunny spring morning, taking the ropeway up from Okaido. The ride was short but scenic—you get a great view of the town and castle walls rising through the trees.

Once I reached the top, I was surprised by how much of the castle remains: real wooden gates, steep steps, even old turret buildings. Inside the main keep, I climbed all the way to the top floor where the windows opened to sweeping views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea.

The stairs were steeper than I expected, but I loved the creaking floorboards and the cool shadows inside. There were samurai helmets and armor on display, and a staff member explained that some of the beams were original.

After exploring, I sat on a bench near the courtyard, sipping a bottle of mikan juice I’d bought from a stall. Sakura petals were floating in the breeze. It was the kind of moment that makes you pause and smile for no reason.

Though centuries of fires and political upheaval have reduced the original 175-building complex, today the temple remains a stunning testament to ancient Japanese architecture and spirituality.

What is the Iya Valley?

Hidden deep in the mountains of Tokushima Prefecture, the Iya Valley is one of Japan’s last remaining “hidden regions.” Steep gorges, vine-covered bridges, misty forests, and tiny villages clinging to the hillsides—this is Japan as few have seen it.

Known for its dramatic scenery, Kazurabashi vine bridge, and hot springs nestled in the cliffs, the Iya Valley feels like stepping back in time. Long isolated from the rest of the country, it was once a hiding place for the defeated Heike warriors in the 12th century, and much of its remote character remains intact today.
