Takayama

Takayama and Shirakawago are high on tourists’ wish lists when they come to Japan. This is not surprising, as some of Japan’s most beautiful sights are located in this region. Takayama is famous for the picturesque old town, its premium sake, and the vibrant festival, and nearby Shirakawago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the traditional thatch-roofed houses that are preserved here.

Other reasons that the area is famous are the high-quality artisanal products that are produced here; washi paper, mino-yaki pottery, cutlery, and lacquerware. Cormorant fishing, which uses specially trained birds to fish for sweet fish, is also a popular attraction in Takayama.
